Who requires this qualification?

Any business that uses CCTV to monitor a public

space or members of the public will need trained

security staff qualified as a CCTV operator and who

hold a SIA licence.

A level 2 award for CCTV operators in the private

security industry qualification is required by law

for an individual to apply for a SIA licence to work

as a CCTV operator

Who can do this course?

  • Learners must be able to communicate in English (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
  • Learners must be 16 or over to undertake this qualification and 18 or over to apply for the necessary SIA licence to work.

Candidates are Required to Provide:

  • 2 photographic identity documents; at least 1 document must show your current address and at least 1 document must show your date of birth; OR
  • 1 photographic identity document and 2 documents with their current address on it.

Please note that proof of address cannot be older than three months.


Common Forms of Identity Documents:

Signed valid passport of any nationality.

Driving licence photo card.

UK birth certificate.

UK biometric residence permit.

Valid EU photo ID card.

Current bank or building society statement.

Utility bill (gas, electric, telephone, water, satellite, cable).

Letter from H.M Revenue & Customs or local authority.

Current credit card statement.

1: Working within the Private Security Industry:

  • Know the main characteristics of the Private Security Industry
  • Understand legislation as it applies to the individual in carrying out a licensable activity
  • Understand the importance of safe working practices to comply with legal requirements
  • Understand fire procedures in the workplace
  • Understand emergencies and the importance of emergency procedures
  • Understand the importance of communication skills and customer care

2: Working as a CCTV Operator within the Private Security Industry:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the CCTV operator and other CCTV staff
  • Understand CCTV codes of practice, operational procedures and guidelines
  • Understand relevant legislation and how it impacts on CCTV operations
  • Understand the importance of communication within CCTV operations
  • Understand emergency procedures in the CCTV control room
  • Understand the characteristics of a CCTV system
  • Understand health and safety relevant to the CCTV operator

3: Practical Operation of CCTV Equipment within the Private Security Industry

  • Understand how to use CCTV equipment
  • Be able to operate the CCTV system

How You Will Be Assessed

At the of the course, you will be assessed on the course units. The assessment format for each unit is broken down below:

  • Unit 1 - Working in The Private Security Industry: A multiple choice question exam with 72 questions. For each question, you will have to chose the correct answer from 4 options provided to you.
  • Unit 2 - Working as a CCTV operator: A multiple choice question exam with 40 questions. For each question, you will have to chose the correct answer from 4 options provided to you.
  • You will be required to demonstrate use of a basic CCTV kit.

All of the assessments will be conducted within the course duration.

We understand that exams can be daunting or nervous for many candidates. Many candidates on the course have not sat an examination in a long time. The trainer on the course will equip you with all the knowledge needed to pass

The course runs over 3 consecutive days (9am-6pm). It's divided into 2 units.

On the final day of your course, there will be 2 multiple-choice examinations and a practical assessment.

How to get your CCTV Operator Licence

Getting your SIA CCTV Operator Licence may seem complicated, but it’s actually quite easy! All you need to do is follow the simple steps:

Pass the Door Supervisor Course

The CCTV Operator Course takes 3 days to complete. The training course is assessed by 2 multiple choice exams and practical assessments.

Complete the licence application on the SIA website

The cost of starting a licence application is £190.00 The SIA will get back to you within 25 working days. In rare cases, this can take up to 6 weeks.

Complete identity checks

You will need to verify your identity to satisfy parts of your SIA application, namely your photo ID. The easiest way to do this is at the Post Office. You can also have someone with a British passport, who is not related to you, to sign the back of your photo ID.

Submit application to the SIA 

The SIA will verify your identity and run a background check on your criminal record. If you have lived abroad for 6 months or more, you may be required to provide some supporting evidence.

Receive your licence in the post

  • You are licensed! Your SIA CCTV Operator Licence is valid for 3 years.
